Beyond Planet Earth: The Future of Space Exploration
(Through  August 12, 2012)
?    See a full-sized re-creation of a lunar habitat, a model of an elevator reaching up into space, a walk-through diorama of the Martian surface, and challenging computer interactive exhibits. Learn about robotic missions that are currently headed deeper into our own solar system, and explore some possible missions of the future: returning humans to the Moon, landing on and deflecting a potentially deadly asteroid, or traveling to Mars—and perhaps even establishing colonies there.

The Butterfly Conservatory: Tropical Butterflies Alive in Winter
(Through May 28, 2012)
?    Mingle with more than 500 live, free-flying tropical butterflies in an enclosed habitat that approximates their natural environment with lush vegetation and live flowering plants. Simulated sunlight and the sound of howler monkeys, parakeets, quetzals, and other species complete the environment.

IMAX Film: Born to be Wild
(Through July 3, 2012)
?    Born to be Wild is an inspiring story of love, dedication, and the remarkable bond between humans and animals. This film documents orphaned orangutans and elephants and the extraordinary people who rescue and raise them—saving endangered species one life at a time.

Hayden Planetarium Space Show
Journey to the Stars
?    Travel through time and space to experience the life and death of the stars in our night sky. Witness the first stars born, and experience brilliant supernova explosions that sent new kinds of matter coursing through the universe, into the atoms of our own bodies and the air we breathe. Visitors tour stellar formations, explore new celestial mysteries, and discover the fascinating, unfolding story that connects us all to the stars.

Upcoming Exhibitions:

Creatures of Light: Nature’s Bioluminescence
(March 31, 2012–January 6, 2013)
Creatures of Light will introduce visitors to the astonishing variety of bioluminescent creatures; explore the different ways in which organisms glow, as well as explain the physics and chemistry of natural light; reveal how the ability to glow can be advantageous; and consider how scientists study—and use—bioluminescence.

Spiders Alive!
(July 28–November 25,  2012)
Spiders Alive! immerses visitors in the fascinating world of spiders.   Experience close encounters with live spiders, including tarantulas, as well as species from other arachnid orders, including scorpions and whipscorpions.

Permanent Halls (included for all visitors):

Akeley Hall of African Mammals

  • Since its opening in 1936, the hall has been considered one of the world's great museum displays
  • The 28 dioramas in this hall depict some of the many animals and habitats of Africa
  • The animals have been reconstructed with such scientific accuracy and detail that they appear astoundingly lifelike
  • The hall is named after Carl Akeley (1864-1926), the explorer, conservationist, taxidermist, sculptor, and photographer who conceived of, designed, and collected for the hall
Guggenheim Hall of Minerals, and Morgan Memorial Hall of Gems
  • These halls contain exquisite treasures systematically arranged according to their physical properties to showcase an extraordinary range of size, color and shape
  • A highlight is the 563-carat Star of India, the largest and most famous sapphire in the world
  • Also featured is the Patricia Emerald, a 632-carat specimen that is one of the very few large, gem-quality emeralds that have been preserved uncut
Spitzer Hall of Human Origins
  • Opened in 2007, it is the first major exhibition to present, side by side, the mutually reinforcing evidence of the fossil record and cutting-edge DNA research
  • The hall covers millions of years of human history, from the emergence of our earliest ancestors through the evolution of our own species
  • The presentation is a fascinating mix of fossils, film, interactive media, life-size tableaux, ancient artifacts, and more
Milstein Hall of Ocean Life
  • Newly renovated, the hall is now a 29,000 square-foot fully immersive marine environment with high definition video projections, interactive computer stations, and eight new ocean habitat displays
  • The celebrated 94-foot blue whale, one of the Museum's star attractions, floats in a "virtual ocean" created through dramatic lighting, video and sound effects
  • The Andros Coral Reef, a two level diorama containing 40 tons of coral, allows a unique view of this ecosystem above and below the water
