In the Sunny Beach area two old wells were known to be supplying
nearby Nesebar with water in ancient times and during the Middle Ages. The actual
Sunny beach resort's construction began back in 1958 during Communist times.
Bourgas' history is more rich in that it was a small Roman
town of Deultum, founded by Emperor Vespasian as a military colony for veterans.
In the Middle Ages a small fortress called Pirgos was erected in the place and
was most probably used as a Black Sea watchtower. Not until the 17tn century
that a town named Ahelo-Bourgas grew in the present-day area of the city. It
soon became the centre of the Southern Black Sea coast, and a city of well developed
industry and trade. Salt and iron were mined here and traded a far. Later a
number of oil, chemical works were developed. Today it is the fourth-largest
city in Bulgaria by population. It is also the largest port in Bulgaria which
adds significantly to the regional economy
