Athens
is an ancient city and the cradle of democracy; rich in history, culture and experiences.
The ancient ruins on the rock of the Acropolis
are among the famous landmarks of Athens. Standing in front of the massive marble
columns of the Parthenon, you get a real sense of the legacy of Hellas and the
cradle of civilisation. At the foot of the Acropolis lies the old quarter of Plaka,
where Socrates and Plato once debated democracy; today it is a pleasant area of
small restaurants, tavernas and bars, and is also one of the few places in Athens
where you can experience the old city.
If
you would like to get away from the tourist areas for a bit, the artists' quarter
around Eksarhia is worth a visit. This area is an oasis of cosy cafés,
particularly ”rebetadiko”: music bars that exude a genuine Greek atmosphere,
and where you can enjoy delicious light dishes and cool drinks to the accompaniment
of the traditional Greek music that the Greek refugees brought with them from
Asia and Turkey.
The idyllic district around the large
port of Piraeus outside the centre of Athens offers a chain of small, cosy marinas.
The harbour promenades of Mikrolimani, Pasalimani and Kastela are packed with
seafood restaurants and bars. Many Athenians visit this area on Friday or Saturday
evenings the perfect spot for a romantic, cosy evening.
