When visiting Berlin, the boulevard of Kurfürstendamm known as 'Kudamm' to the Germans is a good place to start. The area around Kurfürstendamm is one of Berlin's main shopping areas; closest to the city centre lie several department stores and many shops with well-known brands.

At the city centre end, the Kurfürstendamm begins with the beautiful Gedächtniskirche, which stands as a monument to the extensive destruction that Berlin experienced during the Second World War.

If you're visiting Berlin to check out the shopping facilities, the enormous Kaufhaus des Westens is worth recommending.

A distinctive part of Berlin’s history is of course the Berlin wall, which divided the city until 1989 and to a large extent symbolised the Cold War. The history of the Wall and its fall is described in the Mauermuseum on Friedrichstrasse. Here you will find also an exhibition describing some of the more inventive attempts to escape over (or under) the Wall from East Berlin. Outside the museum is a reconstruction of Checkpoint Charlie one of just three places at which it was possible to cross back and forth between the two parts of the city before the Wall fell.

Not far from Checkpoint Charlie lies Brandenburger Tor an important symbol of the united Germany. Brandenburger Tor is also depicted on the German 10, 20 and 50 cent euro coins.

When in Berlin, you can't help noticing the 368 metre tall Fernsehturm (television tower), which has long been one of Berlin's main icons. There is a restaurant in the tower at a height of 203 metres, where you can enjoy a meal and the view while the entire restaurant slowly revolves around the tower's axis.

Berlin has an incredible amount to offer, so no matter whether you're flying there for the shopping and night life or for the art and culture, Berlin is an excellent choice.
