Wine,
wine and more wine It is hard to avoid mentioning wine when talking
about Bordeaux, often called the home of good wine.
Wine
production is immensely important to Bordeaux the area encompasses more than 9,000
wine chateaux and more than 13,000 wine producers. All in all, Bordeaux produces
more than 100 million bottles of wine every year!
The
region has 57 of the so-called Appelations of Controlled Origin (Appellation
d'Origine Contrôlée). Visitors will have plenty of opportunities
to try some wine-tasting at the many charming and beautiful chateaux. You don't
need to be a dedicated connoisseur to fill a whole holiday with wine experiences
in Bordeaux.
But Bordeaux is more than just wine! Since
Bordeaux was founded by the Romans more than 2,000 years ago, both the city and
the region have played an important role in French culture and industrial development
generally. Bordeaux can also boast one of Europe's longest shopping streets the
Rue Sainte Catherine.
If
you are interested in history, a couple of air tickets to Bordeaux will provide
you with rich opportunities to explore the region's many cultural and architectural
attractions; Bordeaux is for example known for its elegant 19th-century architecture.
The Bordeaux International Fair, which takes place every
year at the start of May, attracts more than 300,000 visitors to its exhibitions
on everything from food to furniture design and wine, of course!
Bordeaux
lies in a relatively flat area, which makes it easy to get around in, whether
on foot, by bicycle or on roller skates.
The Bordeaux
region is characterised by three rivers: the Dordogne, the Garonne, and the Gironde.
The Dordogne and the Garonne meet a little north of the town to form the Gironde,
which flows into the Atlantic, in an area popular for its sun, beaches and French
climate.
