Over 1000 years ago Aalborg was a known settlement, mostly as a trading post,
because of its position on the Limfjord. The original name of Aalborg was Alabu.
Noting its long history, a visible burial ground can be seen on Lindholm Høje,
a hill overlooking the city.
With growing trade, Aalborg
prospered during the Middle Ages. It became one of the largest cities in Denmark
and was further enhanced when in 1516 Aalborg was granted a monopoly in salt herring.
An
important base of the Danish air force today, during the German invasion of Denmark
in 1940, the Aalborg Aerodrome was captured by German paratroopers very early
in the action. This is said to be the first city ever to be captured by the new
strategy of using paratroopers.
Today, Aalborg is a growing
industrial and commercial centre. The University of Aalborg also has influenced
a new high tech segment to the economy. And, Danish Distillers of Aalborg is Scandinavia's
largest producer and supplier of spirits for consumption, in particular, it is
the world's largest producer and exporter of the famed Scandinavian drink, akvavit.
