Keeping busy while you visit Alicante will never be a problem since there are so many events and festivals that are taking place all year round. There is something for everyone’s taste, all the way from religious celebrations to the dancing and singing of local customs. Taking in as many events and festivals as you can is a great way to get a feel and flavour of Alicante and the people that live there.
Santa Faz Pilgrimage
Location: various locations in Alicante, ending at the Monastery
April, Annual each year
Hours: beginning at 8:00am
The Monastery of Santa Faz holds the veil that Veronica used to clean the face of Christ as he carried his cross. Join the over 200,000 people that each year walk to the Monastery of Santa Faz in the largest pilgrimage that takes place in Spain. Be ready to start at 8:00am as you walk the 8kms along the road leading from the town hall to the monastery. Visit with the people around you as you walk and be sure to stop for a breakfast of anise rolls and mistela wine.
Saint John's Bonfires
Location: various locations in Alicante
June, annual each year
Hours: all day and night
During this festival the local people pay homage to Saint John by taking part in celebrations of the summer solstice. The celebrations are highlighted with fireworks and bonfires as well as huge events all over the city that include bullfights, music, parades, fireworks competition, any many other unscheduled events. Be sure to enjoy the huge firework display that takes place at St. Barbara Castle.
International Guitar Course
Location: Centro Mpal. de las Artes. Pza. Quijano, 2
Time: second fortnight of July, annual each year
Take the time to check out this event as more than 120 guitarists from all over Spain join together to embark on a guided guitar course.
Castle Evenings
Location: Santa Barbara Castle, Opposite Postiguet Beach, Alicante
Time: July 9 th to August 19 th, annual each year
Hours: Friday and Saturday evenings
Enjoy and open-air dinner while listening to a musical concert under the stars.
Marionette Theatre Festival
Location: Alicante Town Hall - Department of Culture.
Time: November/December, annual each year
This festival started in 1984 and continues today with entertainment for both adults and families
Moors and Christians Festival
Location: various locations in the city
December, annual each year
Hours: all day
If you are in Alicante during December be sure to celebrate with the locals with this festival that celebrates with a variety of religious, historic, and carnival events. All of Spain celebrates this festival but each area of Spain has a different way of celebrating. If you are in Alicante you will find that you are woken by the dianas before you head towards the center of town to wait for the arrival of the Moors and the Christians. Local people will be dressed in period costumes as they re-enact the battles that took place between the Moors and the Christians. The festival takes place at different times throughout the year and ending on December 6 th when the huge procession described above takes place.
