much history and beauty. Alicante is best known for its fabulous beaches but there
is much history and culture as well. In the older sections of Alicante the architecture
shows its pre-historic and Roman history. Castillo de Santa Bárbara is
one of Europe’s largest medieval fortresses and will astound even seasoned
travelers.

The Castle of Santa Barbara dates back to the 11 th Century, but the majority
was built between the 14 th and 16 th centuries. The Castle of Santa Barbara is
one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe and it was thought to have been
built to protect the people of Alicante. The history behind this amazing structure
is lengthy and fascinating. Be sure not to miss the Santa Barbara castle with
its breath-taking views and cultural history.
Municipal Museum Casa de la Asegurada
La Asegurada was built in the 17 th century and now holds one of Alicante’s
most extensive collections of Spanish artists. The building has served a great
many purposes over the years, everything from a prison to a school of commerce.
The art housed here now is mainly 20 th century art and focuses on Spanish artists
of the fifties, as well as avant garde artists.
Alicante Bullfighting Museum Location:
The Alicante Bullfighting Museum
is a must see for anyone interested in the history and current state of bullfighting.
There are several exhibits showcasing famous local bullfighters, such as Vincent
Blau and José Maria Manzanares. For those interested in the history of
bullfighting there is a full library available and facilities for conferences
and discussion groups. The Church
of St. Mary Location: Alicante
The Church of St Mary is the oldest church is Alicante. It was built in the 16
th century over the ruins of a mosque leftover from the days when the Moors inhabited
the area. The interior is gothic-style, and while quite worn, its beauty is still
very apparent. Provincial Archeological
Museum Location: Palace of the Provincial
Council The Provincial Archeological
Museum houses a large collection of archeological objects dating back many centuries.
Many of the remains are not even available to the public, but some of the most
impressive pieces are, which makes this a monument worth visiting. Some of the
most extraordinary pieces include dowries from the Bronze Age, ceramics dating
back to the 16 th to 19 th centuries, and Roman statues.
